it's all good

all is well with surf and turf :) my mind is at ease for the time being (until a few days before my next appointment probably)

she dopplered my belly (only one doppler) she was able to find one heartbeat loud and clear running about 160, but the other one kept moving around so she wasn't able to hear it long enough to measure. that was probably baby B since that was the one doing somersaults at the last u/s. it seemed she found them in different spots, so i didn't feel like it was the same baby we were hearing.

the doctor seemed unenthused. she seemed to be rushing me out of there. they also don't seem to agree with other things i've read about the importance of weight gain in early pregnancy for twins, which concerns me a little. she acted as if they don't want me gaining much more than i would with a singleton, whereas much of the stuff i've been reading recommends 20 pounds by 20 weeks and a pound a week from there at least. any one else who has had or has a twin pregnancy have any input on what their doc says?

I am already nervous about my first OB appointment and I haven't even made it yet. I don't know how soon they'll see me after the RE releases me next week. And I had better be able to convince them of a good reasons to so an ultrasound at 12 weeks because I am NOT waiting until 20 weeks for reassurance.

And I feel you on the PIO front. My RE is tapering me right now and I stop Sunday - just shy of 8 weeks. They will recheck serum levels next week at my last appointment to make sure it's adequate without PIO shots, but sheesh, I won't see the OB for at least a week or two after that, so how do I know if it's fine or not fine? My brain is not ready to let me become a normal pregnant person yet. Even though I'm told my medical professionals that I am. (What do they know?? ;)

I was also very nervous to stop the progesterone. I totally understand that.

My doctors don't seem to think that having twins is anything different than a singleton either. I do appreciate that they seem to want to keep things relatively "normal" (at least, that's the credit I'm giving them). No one seemed in the least bit concerned that I hadn't gained almost any weight until about 15 weeks, if I remember correctly. I do think the weight gain recommendations are excessive and only good for people who have extremely premature babies. Otherwise, I think that much weight gain so quickly is not realistic at all. I also found that between week 15 and now (week 18), I've gained a LOT, and I'm hungry all the time. It seems like I just caught up all at once.

So I wouldn't worry about it too much just yet.

Yay for good news on surf & turf! ;)

Sorry your OB was being uncooperative. Maybe it's the Friday jeebies. Are you attached to her or might you consider interviewing other OBs, maybe a high risk one that specializes in multiples?

I just had my first OB visit with the nurse and she said they recommend gaining between 40 and 60 pounds total for my twin pregnancy. She said I should eat about 500 to 600 more calories per day but was not strict about that. She also said I would get more monitoring with two on the way and I'm happy about that. Glad you were able to hear the heartbeats! I did too and was thrilled!

So glad it all went well. You have a little acrobat in there! So happy it all went great.

My docs were okay with Dr. Luke's weight gain recommendations, but also encouraged me to exercise -- which Dr. Luke seems to discourage (I found the argument compelling that blood that's flowing elsewhere in your body is not going to the uterus/babies).

I did everything I could to gain as much weight as possible and barely came close to the 20 in 20. It's really hard to eat that much, at least for me, between food aversions, nausea, and not eating meat.

FWIW, my gut tells me that if your OB isn't on board with the weight gain recommendations, they aren't truly informed about twin pregnancy and the risks of preterm labor. Personally I'd consider going elsewhere, unless you truly connect to your doc.

I am 16.5 weeks with twins and I have gained 6lbs total so far. At all the ultrasounds that I have had they are both measuring 3-4 days ahead of schedule. I just eat "right" and healthy. My doctor has yet to comment on my weight gain or not enough weight gain. You will be amazed at how much you put on in the second half of your pregnancy anyways. With my first 2 pregnancies that were singletons I gained 59 and 56 lbs! Try and do your best with the weight gain....

I don't know anything about twin pregnancies but I'm glad you got happy heartbeat news.
